This Governors Club custom built home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina is a collaborative vision between architect Abbie Lee Roehm of Paces and Roehm Architecture and BOLD Construction. Transcending the conventional concept of a home, it merges with the natural surroundings, becoming an organic extension of the landscape.

Preservation of the land’s integrity was paramount to owner Jason Dell. “When I purchased this 2.67-acre wooded property, it was important for me to maintain its natural beauty and ambiance. I envisioned every room in the house offering a stunning view of the hardwood forest that captivated me three years ago. Abbie Lee’s expertise exceeded my expectations, seamlessly blending each primary living area with the outdoors. She carefully positioned windows, fine-tuned the home’s elevation, and crafted an expansive rear porch that strikes a perfect balance between openness and weather protection,” said Dell.

The 3-car garage, a feat of engineering, rests atop concrete piers and steel, leaving the land beneath virtually untouched. An artist’s studio cantilevers from this space, providing a sanctuary for creative endeavors.

The home’s structure is a marvel in itself, with structural beams spanning from the East to West facade, supporting insulated SIPs roof panels. Two levels of outdoor living space stretch across the West facade, with a generously angled roof providing both shade and comfort. An outdoor shower invites a moment of pure connection with nature, an oasis of tranquility.

Sustainability is woven into every aspect of this architectural masterpiece. From the thoughtfully crafted formwork to the recycled rice husk siding, and the thermal wall clad with concrete panels that separate the great room from the owner’s suite, each element has been chosen for its eco-friendly footprint.

Step inside, and you’ll find an intentional juxtaposition of materials that adds a playful dimension to the home’s aesthetic. The cool, industrial nature of concrete finds balance in the natural warmth of wood, creating an inviting atmosphere that is both modern and welcoming. A wood-burning stove adds a touch of rustic charm, and expansive glass panels frame a captivating vista of the surrounding trees.

Perhaps one of the most striking features of the residence is the concrete sunken garden and light well. Positioned strategically to capture the morning sunlight from the East, it infuses the lower level with a natural, energizing glow.

In every corner, the thoughtful details and careful consideration for the environment shine through. The result is a modern treehouse, where every element has been meticulously crafted to offer a truly unique living experience.
