After relocating from California, Mickey and Daphnee Russo set their sights on a big change. Retired from long and accomplished careers in hospital management—Daphnee as a nurse manager in Stanford Hospital’s anesthesia department and Mickey as a pharmacy manager and business owner—the couple decided it was time for a new adventure. “After a nationwide search, we found that North Carolina was the state we wanted to move to,” they shared. “And Governors Club was the community that spoke to us.”

Their journey to Governors Club began with a thoughtful exploration of Chapel Hill and the surrounding areas. It wasn’t until they met Scott Kelley with Governors Club Realty that things began to click into place. “Scott was lovely,” Daphnee said. “Right from the beginning he goes, ‘Come on, let’s get in the car.’ And we just started driving and went up and down hills. Everywhere you turn, there’s scenery and greenery.”

They eventually found a unique triangular lot with something rare: views of the forest, golf course, and lake—all in one. Practicality was important, too. As avid gardeners who are mindful of aging well, they chose a flat, manageable property with thoughtful design features to ensure long-term comfort and accessibility.

Mickey and Daphnee worked closely with BOLD Construction to bring their vision to life. “We’ve never worked with a team that cared this much,” said Daphnee. “The quality of the house is just incredible. But for me, on a personal level, it’s about the people. They listened, they heard us, and they accommodated us. In our wildest dreams, we could not have expected it to turn out this way.”

The result? A warm, traditional home designed for real living—with spaces thoughtfully created to entertain, unwind, and age in place gracefully. Among their favorite features are three inviting fireplaces, built-in cabinetry, spacious bathrooms featuring a jacuzzi tub, surround sound throughout, a stunning kitchen, and an outdoor patio and balcony.

Now, just over six weeks into life in their new home, the Russos have already felt embraced by the community. “Everyone has been so welcoming,” they shared. “We’ve been exploring the local trails, parks, and businesses—and we’re about to become Sports Club members and begin enjoying all the activities Governors Club offers.”

Outside of settling into their home, Mickey and Daphnee stay active and engaged. They love traveling, staying fit, and gardening. Passionate sports fans, they’ve held season tickets for the San Francisco Giants, 49ers, Warriors, and Sharks. They also enjoy wine tasting and attending theater productions. Family remains central to their lives: their daughter, along with her husband and their grandson, is pursuing a nursing career in California, while their son is proudly serving his 16th year in the U.S. Navy. Mickey’s father also recently celebrated his 102nd birthday.

Looking ahead, Mickey and Daphnee are eager to establish deeper roots in Governors Club. “We’re antsy to landscape the yard—adding flowers, water features, and yard art,” Mickey said. “But more than anything, we’re looking forward to truly entrenching ourselves in the community and the people here.”
